Slab are kind of like wood board that are made from clay. The can be used to create very geometric shapes or they can be use to wrap around all sorts of objects to create very interested organic forms.
When making a slab you want to take a wedged piece of clay and then use a slab roller. Our slab roller will flatten your clay to 1/2 inch automatically for you. If you want a slab to have a custom thickness then you can use one of the wooden rollers in class. The key to making a good slab pot is in properly joining slab walls together and maintaining a smooth surface as you work. Where ever two slab walls join together they need to be "scored & slipped." After slipping and scoring whatever surfaces connect then you will take a small hand made coil and fill in the seam of the two walls. Look through the slides below to get a visual of this process |
