In ceramics II we will take the skill set that we have learned in ceramics 1 and build upon it. During the first quarter of the semester you will have the opportunity to practices all the techniques you have been exposed to, which should include: wheel, hand building, and sculpture
During the this first quarter you will have 3 projects to begin that will allow you to work these techniques.
1) Advanced Coil Pot 2) Throwing session with the teacher 3) Kiln God/Relic

1) Advanced Coil Pot
An advanced coil pot takes the same construction technique learned in beginning pottery (see the ceramics 1 tab for questions) and expands on them to create more whimsical designs and patterns using the coil technique. Below are some examples of advanced coil pots
Requirements:
8" inches tall minimum
Must have coils that go in three directions
Coils should be "finished" - no boogers or cracks
Inside of the pot should be totally smooth

2) Throwing Session with the Teacher
This unique assignment will give you the opportunity to be self reflective about what you like to do on the wheel and what you feel you need to improve upon. For this project you will select a previously completed project, or a wheel technique that you want to improve on. After selecting what you would like to work on you and Mr. Frampton will work 1 on 1 to help you improve your throwing. You then will be asked to continue to practice the technique and then use what you have learned to complete a wheel thrown project using your newly improved skill set. (This means a fully finished wheel thrown piece, trimming included)
3) Kiln God/Relic
For this project you will be asked to work on your sculpting skills. Your assignment is to create a kiln god or relic. A kiln god is a small statue that sits on the top of a kiln while it is being fired. There are many historical superstitions about the use of kiln gods during ceramic firings. In essence many potters believe that kiln gods will help protect the pots being fired and ensure that they will complete the firing process safely. A relic is a small statue that has personal or cultural significance to its owner. They come in many forms and have many different meanings. Below are examples of both options
