Forming Techniques: Pinch

The pinch technique is one of the most basic ceramic skills. Constructing using the pinch method is essentially building or molding the clay by "pinching" with your fingers. Though the technique is simple, amazing pieces of art can be created by patiently using this method.
The process of making a pinch pot is very simple
1) Start with a round piece of clay that has been properly wedged

2) insert your thumb into the middle of the clay, press down untill you think you are about a 1/2 inch from the bottom but do not press through

3) Using your thumb and finger grab the wall of the clay. Using pressure begin to slowly pinch the wall forcing the clay upward. Continue this process until all of the walls are about 3/8" of an inch thick. Smooth the wall using your finger as you build
