Ceramics II: 2nd Quarter Projects

During second quarter you will have 4 assignments to compete. The four required projects are:

1) Matching Set
2) Cross Cultural Piece w/Writing
3) Ceramic Imitation
     4) High Fire Glaze

Below are some examples of selected imagery that can hopefully give you an idea of what is possible with each project.

1)  Matching Set

Create a minimum of 2 ceramic pieces that work together to create a "set." This means that the pots are connected in some way. Possible connections could be their shape or design. Other connections could be related to function, for instance a teapot and a set of tea cups are a matching set through their function.
Requirements:

6"  each must be inches tall minimum
The created works need to be clearly matching in some way
Each piece must be properly constructed
Can be wheel thrown or hand built
Demonstrate creativity
Demonstrate Craftsmanship

2)  Cross Cultural Piece

Each of us come from some type of culture. For this assignment you will be asked to do some basic research looking into a culture that you are not familiar with. You will find a pattern, design, or symbol that comes from this culture and you will include it into the design of a ceramic work of art. You will be required to print off a simple picture of your selection and write 1 paragraph explaining your decision
Requirements:

8"  each must be inches tall minimum
Properly Constructed
Wheel Thrown or Hand Built
1 Printed page showing your design & culture
1 Paragraph on the backside of your printed page

3)  Ceramic Imitation

Ceramics is an amazing material. Their are certain sculptural designs that could only be made with clay. For this assignment you will select something that would not typically be demonstrated in clay and create a ceramic sculptural version of it. It could be something organic or it could be something rigid and structural
Requirements:

Exaggerated size
High Level of Craftsmanship
Creativity
Properly Constructed

4)  High Fire Glaze

Every pottery student needs the chance to experience the magic of high fire glaze! For this assignment you will be required to create a pot that demonstrates one of three classical forms: vase, planter, or a bowl. You will then fire this piece and glaze it in our glaze room. You will not recieve points untill you have a finished glazed piece THAT HAS YOUR NAME on the BOTTOM of the ceramic work. Nothing will be scored that is unnamed.
Requirements:

6" inches minimum
Must have a classical form: Vase, Planter, or Bowl
Properly Constructed
Craftsmanship
Must be glazed and have your name on the bottom to be graded
