Coils are essentially ropes of clay that are carefully stacked on top of each other and then smoothed together on the inside to maintain strength. You can roll coils by hand, or you can use our coil machine called the extruder. You can make just about anything you can imaging using coils. If you don't want the outside of your pot to look like ropes then use your fingers to carefully smooth the clay together. Coils don't have to only go straight up. You can stack coils slightly outside of each other or inside of each other to make your coil pot curve outward or inward
When joining two coils together that have different levels of moister (old clay from the day before, and new clay), make sure to slip and score those coils together. If you don't it is likely that your coil pot will fall apart eventually. |
