 Beginning Ceramics 1

Welcome to beginning pottery! There is a reason why ceramics is one of, if not the most popular programs at our school. Ceramics gives you the opportunity to do what you always wanted to do as a kid but got in trouble for, which is playing in the mud!
Our class website will be a resource for you to find information about our assignments, and to get caught up if you missed class. Every quarter we will have 4 assignments.  Below you will see information about what we will be doing and what will be expected of you.

QUARTER 1

Assignment 1: Wheel Thrown Half Pots

Every student will create 5 "Half Pots" on the wheel. This assignment will take a few class periods of practice before you will start to feel comfortable.  Watch this video to get a explanation of how I teach beginners how to throw on the wheel.

Assignment 2: Create a Vessel

For your second assignment you will make either a coil pot or a slab pot. You get to choose which one you do first.

Assignment 3: Combined Piece

Students will create a ceramic vessel or container that is made from 50% coils and 50% slabs. Proper construction must be demonstrated for both styles.

You Get What You Put Into It!

Most of you have probably never done ceramics before. Most of you have never sat down at a wheel. If you have never done something before, then it would probably not be very realistic to expect yourself to be awesome at it the first time you try. Throwing on the wheel can be intimidating and a little scary at first. The more you try the less scary it will be and the more you will improve! Be patient with yourself and be willing to put in enough time to see yourself get better.

Class Syllabus/Disclosure Document

Every student should have a copy of the class disclosure. On the backside is a place to date and sign that the student and their guardian have read and understand the expectations and rules of the class. This signed slip is worth points and will be your first assignment. If you are new to the class or simply lost yours please download it here.
